Scoliosis Specific Exercise Seminars for Professionals
Welcome to the World of Scoliosis-Specific Exercise
Scoliosis-specific exercise is as challenging as it is rewarding. Each time you evaluate a new scoliosis spine, it will be a new and unique experience — particular to the unique person in front of you. Each spine will challenge your skills of assessment and exercise decisions. Not only will you be rewarding yourself for the time you put into your education, but those living with scoliosis are extremely grateful for your dedication to their needs. And it’s not just scoliosis we’re talking about here. Once you can evaluate and work well with scoliosis, all spines become your specialty because what happens in a scoliosis spine happens in all spines — just on a smaller scale. Join us and join the Scolio-Pilates mission of bringing scoliosis-specific exercise to all communities!

Do any of these stories sound familiar? These are quotes from our clients when describing their own breathing.
“I couldn’t play the whole game. Because sometimes I just can’t breathe.” 14-year-old soccer player, California
“Sometimes I wheeze when I first start to swim and then my body seems to calibrate.” 45-year-old swimmer, Virginia
“My doctor said without surgery, my breathing would just keep getting worse. I’m not ready to sit in a chair for the rest of my life.” 72-year-old grandmother of three, South Carolina
“I’m just waiting for my last breath.” 35-year-old mother of one, Vietnam
This short course has been created for the professional practitioner working with scoliosis patients and clients. However, all are welcome to join. In this course you will learn:
- The dynamics of the scoliosis respiratory system. Why is it different? What does it affect?
- The physiological challenges that a person with scoliosis faces that prevent normal breathing
- The difference between breathing into the scoliosis pattern or breathing to create change
- Exercises for changing the breathing pattern
- Exercising with a healthy breathing pattern within everyday activities and athletics

Your Module 1 Scolio-Pilates Course is designed to be an experiential approach to understanding scoliosis to enhance learning and advance your teaching skills. You will be better equipped to make thoughtful decisions about the exercises you apply versus following a complex series of rules and guidelines. Welcome to Scolio-Pilates Module 2. Challenge your practice with a Scolio-Pilates Professional Seminar!
Module 2 builds upon the pre-requisite Module 1, Scolio-Pilates Professional Seminar.
We will dive deeper into understanding the anatomy of scoliosis and use that understanding to define the curves of scoliosis (3, 4 and thoraco-lumbar curves). Once we define the curves we can begin to understand how to correct those curves towards neutral. We use scoliosis specific corrections and scoliosis specific exercises to aid us in bringing our clients towards a more balanced system.
The scoliosis specific exercises begin with corrections in the basic positions of prone, supine, side-lying, seated and standing. Once the corrections are applied in the basic positions, we add movement to these corrections either on the mat or with the assistance of the Pilates equipment. Come learn why Scolio-Pilates, a form of Pilates that allows for modifications to assist the client with scoliosis in the Pilates studio, is now being used by children’s hospitals, physical therapy clinics and Pilates studios worldwide to help with the management of scoliosis.

Welcome to Scolio-Pilates
Scolio-Pilates is a scoliosis-specific exercise form that allows for modifications to assist the patient/client with scoliosis. It is a method used by children’s hospitals, physical therapy clinics, and Pilates studios worldwide to assist with the management of scoliosis in a conservative manner.
In this course, Scolio-Pilates welcomes those with advanced training from other scoliosis-specific exercise schools. To be approved to take this course, you must submit your school name, the level you have achieved, and proof of education from that school. Please petition to be able to take this advanced course. We thank you for understanding that not all schools/certifications will be accepted.
Things you’ll learn during this course:
- The Scolio-Pilates philosophy of scoliosis-specific exercise will be discussed. You are invited to share/discuss how it is the same/different from your current training.
- Scolio-Pilates breathing philosophy
- Scolio-Pilates breathing exercises
- Wedging and other assistive corrections in standing, seated, prone, supine, side-lying, and quadruped.
- Exercises to be performed on the Pilates mat or during activities of daily living. This course will include exercises on the Pilates equipment if students have access to the equipment. Otherwise, we will focus on exercises that can be done solely on the mat and with small exercise equipment available to most — balls, bands, wall bars, Scolio-Wedges, etc.
- Class planning. How to best use Scolio-Pilates along with your current practice.

- Can anyone attend the Mentorship and be an Authorized Scolio-Pilates Practitioner?
No, to be anAuthorized Scolio-Pilates Practitioner, you must be a professional in your field of movement or therapeutic exercise. Pilates instructors and Physical therapists are acceptable professions. If you are a professional in some other form of movement or health management techniques, please just ask us! Email Karena at Karena@osteopilates.com.
- What is the process for becoming an Authorized Scolio-Pilates Practitioner?
You must first attend the Anatomy of Scoliosis course, followed by the Scolio-Pilates Seminar. After attending the Scolio-Pilates Seminar, you can register for the Scolio-Pilates Mentorship. There must be 6-12 months between your Scolio-Pilates Seminar and the Scolio-Pilates Mentorship so that you have time to practice what you learned in your first two courses. When you register for your Mentorship, you will receive a sample case study that you will use as a model to complete your own case study. This case study is part of your application to attend the Scolio-Pilates Mentorship. When your application is accepted, you can then attend the Mentorship. After the Mentorship, you will have more work to do to complete your case study. - What is the case study?
The case study is basically a very thorough report of the work you performed with one scoliosis client/patient. You will see this client for 10 visits and report on what you did, the progress you made, questions you have, and where you want to go next with this client. Please see the sample case study to help you perform this task. - What are the benefits of being an Authorized Scolio-Pilates Practitioner?
There are many. Just to name a few, you will be part of an active group of passionate practitioners. You can ask questions of Karena or the other practitioners to help you when you run into questions or need advice with clients or patients. You will be part of a quarterly online meeting to refresh your knowledge and skills of scoliosis and Scolio-Pilates. We invite the best minds in the field of movement and scoliosis to speak at these meetings so that the learning continues for all of us. - From a business point of view, is there a need to help those with scoliosis?
Yes, and YES! This is a very under-served population. For several of our practitioners, once they begin seeing scoliosis clients, it becomes the biggest percentage of their clientele. We need more practitioners with a passion for serving this underserved population! - Is it going to be fun or REALLY fun?
It’s going to be REALLY fun! We always have such a great time. The entire journey of becoming an Authorized Scolio-Pilates Practitioner can be just over a year-long process, but the rewards are great.

Your Module 1 Scolio-Pilates Course is designed to be an experiential approach to understanding scoliosis to enhance learning and advance your teaching skills. Why is the “experience of scoliosis” important? Because three-dimensional correction with Scolio-Pilates is complex. Understanding scoliosis through your own experience, in addition to cognitively, makes it more comprehensible. You will be better equipped to make thoughtful decisions about the exercises you apply versus following a complex series of rules and guidelines Welcome to Scolio-Pilates Module 2. This course is a building block and lays the foundation for the Scolio-Pilates Module 2: The Professional Seminar. You will receive a strong base in the anatomy of scoliosis to help you understand what is happening under the skin that creates the changes we see and experience with scoliosis on the surface and with movement. With this understanding, you will be better equipped to make the best scoliosis-specific exercise choices. Topics to be covered include:
- What is scoliosis?
- Who it affects and its effects on the systems of the body
- Experience scoliosis! What it feels like to do Pilates with scoliosis
- Anatomy of Scoliosis
- Understanding functional v structural scoliosis
- Defining the convexities and concavities
- Learn the curve shape based on the convexities and concavities
- Theories and laws of movement that apply to scoliosis
- The first 7 exercises for scoliosis

Welcome to Scolio-Pilates Module 2
Module 2 builds upon the pre-requisite Module 1, Scolio-Pilates Professional Seminar.
We will dive deeper into understanding the anatomy of scoliosis and use that understanding to define the curves of scoliosis (3, 4, and thoracolumbar curves). Once we define the curves we can begin to understand how to correct those curves toward neutral. We use scoliosis-specific corrections and scoliosis-specific exercises to aid us in bringing our clients towards a more balanced system.
The scoliosis-specific exercises begin with corrections in prone, supine, side-lying, seated, and standing positions. Once the corrections are applied in the basic positions, we add movement to these corrections either on the mat or with the assistance of the Pilates equipment. Come learn why Scolio-Pilates, a form of Pilates that allows for modifications to assist the client with scoliosis in the Pilates studio, is now being used by children’s hospitals, physical therapy clinics, and Pilates studios worldwide to help manage scoliosis.

Testimonies from your colleagues
I really enjoyed the class. Full of analyzing and problem-solving, thinking out of the box with ideas. Teaching us to “fish”. Love it. I appreciate the fast follow thru with the certificate. – MS
I really appreciate the kind and gentle way you teach the imbalances and to the teachers working to understand them better. It’s confusing and interesting and it seems to be a new puzzle to unravel with every human who walks through the door. – HT
Finally, I am loving the course. I’ve been struggling with online learning. My eyes do not like to look at the computer screen. I usually want to close my eyes and take a nap during online learning. This has NOT happened in your course. Yay! – EH
Very Exciting!! Thanks again! You’re changing the life of a client, as well as my own as her instructor! – M
I saw my first scolio client today and we did ONLY scolio pilates! It was incredible! I love learning this!!!! – AW
