Scolio-Pilates® is a three-dimensional scoliosis-specific exercise program, created by Karena Thek.

The Scolio-Pilates program consists of a number of intensive courses split into modules. Module I is the introductory course covering an in-depth look into the anatomy of scoliosis along with an elongation approach to begin managing scoliosis through exercise. Module II is the Scolio-Pilates Professional Seminar, Module III is the Scolio-Pilates Mentorship.

As of 2020, Module I is compulsory for all interested instructors who wish to complete the Scolio-Pilates Mentorship authorization program and become authorized Scolio-Pilates Practitioners. In addition, all are invited to Modules I and II, it is an informative introduction for anyone aiding others with scoliosis or managing their own scoliosis.

Scolio-Pilates is designed for Pilates Instructors and Physical Therapists seeking to help their clients and patients with scoliosis. The program’s reach is growing and is now including as part of the treatment model for scoliosis at Dayton Children’s Hospital Ohio in the United States since 2017.

Experience scoliosis! Your Preparatory Scolio-Pilates Course is designed to be an experiential approach to understanding scoliosis.

Why is the “experience of scoliosis” important? Because three-dimensional correction with Scolio-Pilates is complex. Understanding scoliosis through your own experience, in addition to cognitively, makes it easier.  You will be better equipped to make thoughtful decisions about the exercises you apply versus following a complex series of rules and guidelines.

In this Module I Scolio-Pilates Course, you will feel in your own body the changes that occur with scoliosis.  You’ll spend time with hands-on break-out projects that make scoliosis more comprehensible.  And you will be better equipped to take on even more information in Module II, the Scolio-Pilates Professional Seminar.

Topics covered in Module I include:

  • What is scoliosis? Who it affects and its effects on the systems of the body
  • Experience scoliosis! What it feels like to do Pilates with scoliosis
  • Anatomy of Scoliosis
  • Understanding functional v structural scoliosis
  • Defining the convexities and concavities
  • Theories and laws of movement that apply to scoliosis
  • The first 5 exercises for scoliosis
