Description
Scolio-Flats
The Scolio-Flats are scoliosis-specific support pillows designed for use in prone (face-down) positions, where precision matters. Unlike wedges, these supports are intentionally flat, measuring approximately 1.5 inches in height, because in prone positioning, a wedge would increase side-bending into the curve rather than reduce it.
In scoliosis, the spine is both rotated and side-bent. When lying face-down, placing a wedge-shaped pillow under the hollow (concave) side of the spine would amplify the side-bendāworking against the goal of neutral alignment. The flat shape of the Scolio-Flat avoids this problem, allowing the spine to remain level while addressing rotation in a safe and effective way.
Placed strategically, the Scolio-Flat helps guide the concavity posteriorly (toward the back), encouraging the spine to derotate toward a more neutral position. This subtle change occurs within the connective tissues and rib structures, creating space where the body most needs itāwithout forcing or overcorrecting.
As the spine derotates, the rib cage becomes more available to movement, allowing the breath to expand into the hollowed areas more fully. This improved access to breath supports both comfort and function, and it plays a crucial role in strengthening work. With the ribs more open and organized, muscles can engage to maintain space, rather than collapsing back into the concavity during effort.
The Scolio-Flats provide a stable, quiet foundation for prone strengthening, helping the body learn how to support itself in a more balanced configuration. Simple in design yet highly specific in purpose, these flat supports are essential tools for protecting alignment, improving breath capacity, and reinforcing strength where scoliosis needs it most.
Precise. Supportive. Essential.
The Scolio-Flats do exactly what wedges cannotāwhen strengthening the spine matter most.
| Feature | Scolio-Flat | Scolio-Wedge |
|---|---|---|
| Best Used In | Prone (face-down) positions | Supine |
| Shape | Flat, low-profile pillow | Inclined wedge |
| Approx. Height | ~1.5 inches | Varies by size and model |
| Primary Purpose | Derotation without increasing side-bending | Derotation and elongation toward neutral |
| Why This Shape Matters | A flat surface prevents added side-bend into the curve when prone | The incline gently glides the spine away from side-bending |
| Effect on the Spine | Guides the concavity posteriorly toward neutral | Encourages connective-tissue change, length, and decompression |
| Breathing Benefits | Allows breath to fill the hollow side of the rib cage | Improves rib expansion through elongation |
| Strengthening Support | Helps maintain openness and prevents collapse during prone strengthening | Supports strengthening in a longer, more neutral position |
