I did get one question that I didn’t see until after the meeting was over. Here it is along with the answer.

Can you speak to the SI joint and it’s “glitchiness” related to scoliosis? As an example, if you have a hip glide to the right, does it often make the left SI joint glitchy in terms of movement (bending forward, walking, getting up from seated position)? And is that a day to day thing or something that straightens itself out with the exercises over time?

It’s not predictable which hip glide is going to make which side of the Sacral Iliac (SI) joint feels more “glitchy”. There are other factors involved that would need to be taken into account:

  • Which way does the pelvis rotate?
  • Is the pelvis being moved cranially on one side (caudally on the other)?
  • Which way are the innominates flaring?
  • Is there torsion in the pelvis and sacrum?

Even when we take all this into account, we couldn’t write a dichotomous result (like a flow chart of yes’s and no’s) as to what kind of result that will bring about in the SI joint. Another important thing to keep in mind is the last bullet point above, the torsion that may be happening in the bones. If you consider the pressure that some of the bones have been living under and that the bones will re-shape themselves to that pressure, then you have a really unique set of circumstances that you are working with.

I think the best way to consider the SI glitchy-ness, is that it is there, and we accept that it exists due to the forces moving through our spine and body. Our job is to consider how can we lessen the pressure of the pelvis, lumbar, and femurs into the pelvis to lighten the load and torque on the pelvis and therefore the SI. This comes from “playing” with the corrections. I find that for most of my SI clients, we have to first find out if the pain is lessened by opening the SI joint or by closing it. Then with that information, we can move forward with the Scolio-Pilates corrections to begin to stabilize the region.
