This Pilates Method Alliance Continuing Education Course is designed to provide skills to work more effectively and safely with common spine pathologies in the Pilates fitness setting. Pathologies include disc disorders, stenosis, spondylosis, spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, osteoporosis, facet joint syndrome and scoliosis. Note: Sscoliosis is covered most thoroughly in the 11-hour course. All others are discussed in depth in the 5-hour course. Both courses offer 11 and 5 PMA Continuing Education Credits respectively.
Sample Schedule for 5-hour Course:
10-10:30am: Mat Class
10:30-11:30am: Anatomy of Pathology
11:30am-12:30pm: In-depth pathology description with exercise contraindications for pathologies
12:30-1pm: Findings of interest: Mayo Clinic Study: osteoporosis;
Stretch v. neural stretch; Spine flexors v. spine extensors in the back pain patient
1-2pm: Lunch
2-3:30pm: Choosing a stability level: 1-4; Working with the client: pathology practical
3:30-4pm: Q & A and continuation of practicum
Sample Schedule for 11-hour course:
See 5-hour schedule plus the following:
4-5pm: Critical thinking and application of findings; how to work with multiple pathologies and within different levels (injured athlete to injured senior)
Day Two:
10-11:00am: Mat Class for asymmetrical spines
11-1pm: 3-dim. anatomy of the asymmetrical spine, specifically 3- and 4-curve scoliosis with principles based on the Schroth Method
1-2pm: Lunch
2-3pm: Exercise practicum
3-4pm: Program design and critical thinking
